Common Questions

New Zealand — Frequently Asked

What's the difference between Skilled Migrant Category and Work to Residence?

The Skilled Migrant Category is a points-based system for skilled professionals who want to immigrate to New Zealand. Work to Residence is for skilled workers who have a job offer and want to work for 2 years before applying for Resident Visa.

What's the difference between Resident Visa and Permanent Resident Visa?

A Resident Visa allows you to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely. After 2 years of holding a Resident Visa, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa, which allows you to come and go from New Zealand freely without travel conditions.

How is my Skilled Migrant points calculated?

Under the new system (2023+), points are awarded for skilled work experience (1-6 points) and qualifications (3-6 points). You need a minimum of 6 points. Under the old system, you needed 160 points from factors like age, experience, qualifications, and job offer.

Do I need a job offer for New Zealand immigration?

For the Skilled Migrant Category, a job offer is preferred but not always required. For Work to Residence, a job offer is required. For Student Visa, you don't need a job offer.

How long does the New Zealand immigration process take?

Skilled Migrant Category (8-12 months), Resident Visa (8-12 months), Work to Residence (4-6 months), Student (2-3 months), Entrepreneur (6-12 months).

Can I include my spouse and children in my application?

Yes. Most New Zealand visa programs allow you to include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in the same application.

What happens if my application is refused?

We review the refusal reasons with you and offer a refusal-analysis and re-filing service to identify what can realistically be corrected — refusals are usually tied to specific documentation or eligibility gaps, not random chance.

What does Esse India charge for New Zealand immigration?

Fees depend on the visa category and program and are confirmed in writing before you pay anything — ask for the full breakdown of consultation, documentation, filing and government fees at your first meeting.
